Australian Punk-Rock band 5 Seconds Of Summer performed at Capital FM’s Jingle Bell Ball as a three piece because guitarist Michael Clifford lost his passport!
The boys who were performing in America last week, had to leave Michael behind as they travelled to the UK to perfect at the Ball. It was announced just on Friday that they would be Sunday’s shows opening act.
The band took to twitter to tell the fans that he would not be joining them in London, tweeting ‘So Mikey lost his passport 🙁 That means he cant fly to the UK & has to stay in the US, so were playing #CapitalJBB as a three piece today..’. Alongside this he is also missing the band’s book signing in Liverpool on Tuesday 9th December.
Before the show, in an interview with Capital, Ashton stated ‘its going to be weird’ when asked how they feel about performing without Mikey, with Luke jokingly commenting that there would be ‘less running around by a red haired person’. Ashton finished the interview saying it would be ‘less active’. Well it certainly wasn’t as the band still preformed some of their biggest hits including ‘She Looks So Perfect’ and ‘Amnesia’ and sending the crowd into a fangirl frenzy.
The UK is a very special place for the Aussie boys, its where they started their first ever studio album and filmed the ‘Try Hard’ music video at the iconic Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Whilst they were here, they also teamed up with McFly and James Bourne to pen some songs, fingers crossed for a collaboration soon then!
Blink 182’s front man Mark Hoppus even got involved with the Passport jokes tweeting ‘I stole Michael’s passport. It was me’. The band also caused controversy after being filmed with a passport saying it was Mikey’s, the boys themselves even had to clarify it wasn’t. They also changed the lyrics to ‘She Looks So Perfect, singing ‘If I showed up with a plan ticket and a passport with Michael’s name on it’, they saw the opportunity and they took it.
It was evident that Michael felt awful about this situation, he tweeted ‘Really really sorry to anyone I’ve let down by not being able to come, you get a free pass to call me stupid’. Even though the UK is a special place, they haven’t had much luck recently, as they had to cancel their performance at Radio 1’s Teen Awards back in October due to Ashton’s appendix operation.
The boys are coming back to the UK on their ‘Rock Out With Your Socks Out’ Tour in 2015, which has been a sell out.
