An onlooker in the audience said: “The man was actually on stage for quite a long time before security did anything about it. He tried to high-five the band but none of them would.

“Eventually one guy ran on stage and dragged him off. It was actually very entertaining.”

Taking to Twitter after the performance, Lee wrote: “There are so many of them I thought anyone could have a go. Really hope the boys keep me on #LeeNelsonforStereoKicks”

The stand up – real name Simon Brodkin – later added: “Stereo Kicks were top lads. Still think they’d be better off with 9. I’d vote for them but Cowell’s got my phone.”

All of the judges praised the boys on their professionalism during the incident with Simon Cowell joking that Louis Walsh had added yet another member to the eight-piece group. Mel B then revealed that Cheryl Fernandez-Versini originally thought the invader was Take That’s Mark Owen.

Although the boys weren’t too pleased.

Over on the Xtra Factor, James Graham blasted: “It went through my head at one point to pick up a chair and hit him over the head with it.”

Although not all eight members were so angry, with Jake Sims revealing how he had ‘went with it’ and high fived the intruder.

A spokesperson for The X Factor said: “During Stereo Kicks’ performance this evening, there was a brief disturbance on stage, which was immediately dealt with by security.”

They added: “The performance continued as planned.”

The X Factor continues tonight on ITV at 8pm with special performances from One Direction and Sam Smith.
