Brian Blessed collapsed on Monday night (January 19) during a performance of King Lear.
The 78 year old fainted whilst on stage at Guildford’s Holy Trinity Church alongside his daughter Rosalind who plays Goneril, one of Lear’s three daughters.
When Blessed collapsed, fellow actor Noel White reportedly announced: “Ladies and gentlemen, this is not part of the play. Is there a doctor in the house?”
A local surgeon examined Blessed and was taken off the stage whilst the audience applauded, according to The Daily Mail.
Brian returned to the stage just 20 minutes later and said to the audience:
“I feel such an idiot and am not in the habit of doing this, but I have a little fibrillation.”
Caroline Devlin, director of the production said:
“Brian was an inspirational wonder. He had a small heart operation three years ago.
“We are not entirely sure why he became so dizzy but he is a 20-year-old in a 78-year-old’s body. There was no stopping him.”
Shakespeare’s King Lear continues at Guildford’s Holy Trinity Church until February 14.
