We now reach the 9th week of The Voice UK where the battle rounds are at their second phase.
Episode 9 sees the final battle where the coaches Rita Ora, Tom Jones, will.i.am and Ricky Wilson see their acts battle it out in an attempt to reach the knockout stages. Will they be able to convince the coaches they have what it takes to be this years The Voice UK winner?
Singing for Team Will:
First for Team Will is Jake Shakeshaft and Stephen Cornwell who sing Every Tear Is A Waterfall by Coldplay. Rita seemed to be hot and flustered by both, but especially Stephen, saying ‘Ladies, can you blame me?’ and presenter Marvin Humes commenting on his broad shoulders and how putting his arm around him deems difficult! Tom takes the conversation back to their actual singing, stating how he ‘loved what they did with it!’
Performing an Aretha Franklin & The Eurthmics classic is Sheena McHugh and Hollie Barrie singing ‘Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves’. Coach Will was pleasantly surprised with the standard of their battle, saying ‘in rehearsals I didn’t think you had it but you were awesome tonight’, and praising Hollies dedication as she left her honeymoon early to rehearse!
We also see Esmee Denters and Andrew Marc, and they are performing ‘Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic’ by The Police. Will, who has known Esmee for years, said that when she initially auditioned he ‘didn’t expect to turn around and see Esmee’! Andrew ‘blew’ Rita away with ‘his power’ and she didn’t know that he could sing that well!
Singing for Team Rita:
Rita’s two acts Liss Jones and Vanessa Hunt sing ‘Hunt’ by Paula Abdul, with Liss saying herself that this experience is very different to ‘driving a van around’! Ricky, who turned for both of them, says how ‘you are both meant to be singers and meant to be on stage’ and their own coach Rita who states ‘you are two incredible females’ in pride.
Next battle is a pair of duos – The Mac Bros and DTwinz performing ‘Maps’ by Maroon 5. Their coach Rita says how proud she is of them both, comparing DTwinz to cats – ‘throw them out of the window and they land on their feet’! Will also enjoyed it, saying it was ‘spot on awesome’.
‘Don’t Speak’ by No Doubt is the song that NK and Karis Thomas perform for coach Rita. 16 year old Karis was praised by their coach, saying how she could close her eyes and thought she could easily listen to that in the radio. She also said how NK’s voice ‘was so smooth he makes me want to have babies’!
Singing for Team Ricky:
For Team Ricky is Letitia George and Vikesh Champaneri who according to Will, were ‘confident’ and ‘comfortable’ like ‘they were having a good time’ – he steals Vikesh in this round (coaches are only allowed two steals during the battles process). They sang ‘Under Pressure’ by Queen which impressed their coach, and ultimately did them proud, which he said ‘it was amazing’.
Autumn Sharif and Hannah Willdes battle together for team Ricky, who sing ‘If I Ain’t Got You’ by Alicia Keys. Ricky found this decision hard, who said ‘I feel a little bit sick’ who adds ‘that was perfect’! Rita, who steals Hannah, says their performance was perfect!
Ricky’s last battle before the knockouts is Classical Reflection with Emmanuel Nwamdi – they sing ‘The Living Years’ by Mike & The Mechanics. Coach Ricky admitted to testing the twins, Classical Reflection, stating ‘I’ve been testing them. I got one of them to draw a picture of an animal and the other guessed it. Then I did a shape and a colour and they got it right. It’s amazing’. Jokes aside however, Tom commented ‘that’s so good I didn’t want it to end’!
Singing for Team Tom:
‘Am I Wrong’ by Nico & Vinz is sang by Cai Williams and Daniel Duke where Tom admitted that this was a hard battle to put together as they are both so different but ‘each in their own way are great performers’. Will agrees, who said ‘I thought that was really interesting because I couldn’t take my eyes off Mr Williams’
Sasha Simone and Lisa Ward battle next, who perform ‘Track Of My Tears’ by Smokey Robinson & The Miracles. Ricky seemed jealous of Tom who has Sasha Simone, where he turned for her in the blinds but lost out to Will – ‘I really fought for you. I lost. I’m so jealous after that performance’. Every coach was very much impressed by Sasha.
Last of Tom’s battle rounds is Lara Lee and Kim Alvord where Tom found this decision very hard, admitting ‘they made [the decision] more difficult for me as they sang it so well’ and how he is sad there is no steals left because they both deserve to go through! The two sang ‘My Kind Of Love’ by Emeli Sande.
