Cheryl has left social media in despair and outrage after saying that you shouldn’t tell someone who is overweight that they look “great”.
These controversial comments follow a statement she made just a few months ago suggesting that it should be illegal to publicly criticise others over the way they look.
Speaking to InStyle about the weight loss criticism she received recently, Cheryl said: “It’s crazy double standards. You’d never be allowed to say to somebody, ‘Oh, you look a bit fat’.
“And being overweight is unhealthy – it’s actually a bad message to tell someone who is obese that they look ‘curvy’ or ‘great’.”
She added: “But you know what? After this length of time, there’s nothing I can hear about myself that I haven’t already heard.”
Many people took to Twitter to express their anger, with one person saying “You can’t tell a fat person they look good, but you can tell someone who is underweight?”. With another person commenting “people tell fatsos that we’re fat all the time. Nice to know you don’t want us to get a compliment every once in a while”.
However, some people did agree with Cheryl’s point, including presenter Kirsty Allsopp. She said “I 100% agree with Cheryl on this, obesity can kill you and if we really love our NHS then we need an honest debate on this”
