Harry Styles’ debut single ‘Sign of the Times’ reached number one in the Official Charts this week, despite low sales.
After 13 weeks at Number One, Ed Sheeran has been knocked to second position by former One Direction member, Harry Styles.
Harry Styles’ debut single, Sign of the Times, was released on Friday.
According to the Official Charts Company, just three days after, the single had a total of 30,000 download and stream sales in the UK alone. This positioned the record well ahead of Ed Sheeran’s two singles, Galway Girl and Shape of You.
Although Harry is number one, it’s been reported that he is ‘concerned’ alongside his team about the low sales of his single.
Harry’s first-week sales (62,900) is half the number his former 1D bandmate Zayn Malik scored with his debut single Pillowtalk.
A source told The Sun: “Harry has waited so long to release his music, so the figures have ensured it’s become an anticlimax.
“Instead of sticking to his mainstream roots he’s tried to come across edgy and arty — going against the formula which made One Direction a phenomenon.”
The insider added: “The strategy has completely backfired and Harry and his team will be concerned, despite getting to No 1.”
Due to a glitch on Spotify during the week, users were unable to search for his new single, potentially losing him vital streams.
However, technological issues do not seem to have had an impact on Harry Styles’ success as he has earned his first number one as a solo artist.
