Ed Sheeran ends 2017 by claiming a new Official Charts record!

Ed Sheeran is finishing a hugely successful year by claiming a new Official Charts record.

Not only has Ed Sheeran managed to bag his first Christmas number one single, the singer-songwriter is finishing the year by claiming a new record on the final Official Albums Chart of 2017.

Ed Sheeran’s third studio album, ‘÷’ has returned to the Number 1 spot on the Official Albums Chart, it’s the album’s seventh stint at the top.

Official Charts has now revealed that Ed has set ‘a new record for most spells at Number 1 by a male solo album’.

This was first achieved by Sam Smith’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’ album which spent eight weeks in total at Number 1 back in 2015.

Ed is responsible for many of the biggest tracks of the year with ‘Galway Girl’, ‘Castle On The Hill’ and ‘Shape Of You’ featuring Stormzy, which is the UK’s biggest-selling single of the year, and his latest single, ‘Perfect.’

‘Perfect’ won Christmas with an astonishing 85,000 combined sales (acquired this week), split across 45,000 downloads and 6 million streams.

Ed told OfficialCharts: “Thank you very much for making Perfect Christmas Number 1. This is an actual dream come true and I’m very proud and happy.

“Thank you so much and have a very Merry Christmas, happy holidays and a Happy New Year.”
