‘Wicker Man’ unearthed by Alton Towers as the name for SW8!

Wicker Man has been unearthed by Alton Towers as the name for Secret Weapon 8.

The new wooden rollercoaster, code named ‘Secret Weapon 8’ (SW8) has been officially unearthed as ‘Wicker Man’ by Alton Towers Resort.

Alton Towers’ new attraction has moved away from steel and they’ve settled on a new wooden coaster.

SW8 is set to be themed on the 1970s horror film The Wicker Man.

It’s due to be opened in Spring 2018, although Alton Towers have yet to confirm an opening date.

Unlike the launch of The Smiler, the theme park has not advertised SW8 as a ‘world first’ coaster but instead a ‘world class experience’.

The Smiler was a world’s first with 14 loops – the most inversions of any coaster.

Nemesis was teased at Europe’s first inverted looping coaster.

Alton Towers’ Air coaster was the first ‘lying down’ ride, and Oblivion was the first vertical drop.

The Wicker Man was a horror film in 1973 starring Edward Woodward, Britt Ekland and Christopher Lee.

It’s not been confirmed if the wooden coaster will be family orientated, or have an adult horror theme.

Bradley Wynne, Creative Lead at Alton Towers Resort said: “We are delighted to finally be announcing Wicker Man as the latest ground-breaking thrill attraction from Alton Towers Resort for 2018.

“Guests will be ‘chosen’ to take part in a celebratory ‘rite of passage’ as they race through the flaming Wicker Man.

“We hope visitors will be blown away by Wicker Man’s breath-taking scale whilst the primal essence of the wooden coaster and astonishing effects will leave them delighted, exhilarated and eager to ride again.”
